While it certainly is human nature to dream about “striking it rich”, the truth is that trading isn’t necessarily going to work out like that for you. You can certainly make strong profits, but to think that you are going to turn $500 into a million practically overnight is probably a stretch by any imagination.
Many new traders are convinced they can make their money explode in value. And to be honest – it certainly can happen. But what they never seem to do is think about what could happen if their trades go against them. It’s much easier to imagine a 50% gain than it is a 50% loss for most people.
This is one of the major things that separate the professional from the amateur. The professional understands that a lot of what makes for a successful trader isn’t necessarily human nature. By knowing this, the trader also understands that focusing on what might go wrong is what can keep them in the game. Granted, it isn’t as fun – but the professional understands that this is a business, and treats it as such.
The professional understands that while it is more fun to dream about doubling your money, the truth is that market conditions can change at any moment. This means that you can always lose money, and there is never a “sure thing”. You must be able to assess the risks to your position at any time with a clear mind. Daydreaming about getting rich overnight isn’t going to be conducive to that goal.
This doesn’t mean the professional will be fearful, just realistic. The professional understands who compound interest works, and more importantly – how to make it work for them. They understand that by limiting risk, you can stay in the game much longer and see the account compound itself over and over. This is how the professional comes out on top in the end.
By keeping risk down, they know that even if they have a couple of losing trades – they can still be around for when that great trade presents itself. There can be nothing worse for a trader than to see themselves be proven right in the long run – but only after blowing up their account.
